  • A large pastry bag
  • A wilton 2D tip (a closed star tip) or 1M tip ( an open star tip)
  • A batch of thick and sweet icing
  • Some cupcakes which are baked and cooled well

  1. Hold your piping or pastry bag straight up; you have to start frosting cupcakes from the outer side. Make a swirl around the outside rim.
  2. Squeeze the piping bag with a little pressure on  while you are working.
  3. Keep squeezing and swirling around the whole cupcake outside edge until you get a circle of the icing on your frosting cupcakes.
  4. When the first layer is complete, start making another layer.
  5. Start piping from the outside edge and keep working toward the center.
  6. When you finish piping in the center, release the pressure you make on the piping bag and pull it straight up.
  7. You can use sprinkles for decorating while frosting cupcakes.
That’s it! As I said before, it is not that difficult piping on your frosting cupcakes. Just be patient and practice.

  • Make sure that the ingredients you use for making frosting cupcakes such as milk and butter are all fresh. This will help you avoid getting a thin frosting that you can’t hold its shape well.
  • If you want to make your frosting cupcakes much quicker, put a large bowl in the fridge for 10 minutes, and then you can put the icing in it. This will help keep it firm when you are making frosting cupcakes.
  • The frosting should be soft in order to be easily spread on the cupcakes.
  • If you find that frosting is too solid and stiff, you can add a tablespoon of milk until you get the consistency you like.
  • Be keen that you don’t use too much liquid in your frosting in order to get a thick icing for your frosting cupcakes.
  • If you find that your icing is somehow thin, you can put it in the fridge to make it a little bit stiff or you can add some powdered sugar
